Let’s work together to create a shared vision of The Green Corridor
We started this campaign on 5 Nov 2010 to support The Green Corridor proposal by the Nature Society (Singapore), and our aims were to:
- Gather support for The Green Corridor and unite supporters
- Show the government that there is public interest and support for The Green Corridor
- Archive stories, photos and videos on the railway and The Green Corridor
We supported the proposal because we feel that it would improve Singapore’s long-term resilience through creating more opportunities in preserving our shared memories and creating our shared vision.
On 1 Jul, URA announced that it “will comprehensively review and chart the development plans for the former railway lands and their surrounding areas. As part of its review, the URA will study the possibility of marrying development and greenery, such as applying innovative strategies to maintain a continuous green link along the rail corridor without affecting the development potential of the lands.”
To chart the development of the rail corridor together with interest groups, Minister of State for National Development, BG Tan Chuan-Jin, with MND, URA and NParks, has formed a consultation group, which involves Nature Society, Singapore Heritage Society, NUS academics and other interested individuals, including us. There would also be various activities and opportunities to engage the public over the next 2 years, before the plans for the rail corridor are presented as part of the 2013 Master Plan.
With the recent “endorsement” from PM Lee during his National Day Rally speech, The Green Corridor (in principle) as a continuous green link is likely to become a reality. What remains uncertain is the actual look and feel of the development, which would be decided after the consultation period. So it’s important now for everyone to share their idea and vision of The Green Corridor that they wish to see.
With these recent positive developments, we have come to an end to our current campaign to gather support for the proposal and show the government that that is public interest. However, our work is not completed yet. Now is the time to shift our campaign focus towards gathering public ideas for The Green Corridor.
We hope that all of you can actively suggest ideas for The Green Corridor, just as you have actively supported The Green Corridor so far. URA has just launched a more interactive platform to gather ideas for the rail corridor, where you can submit your ideas, as well as view, comment on, and vote for other ideas.
Start submitting your ideas today at http://www.ura.gov.sg/railcorridor/uservoice.html. Let’s work together to create a shared vision of The Green Corridor that we are proud of and to build a space where our children and their children can enjoy!
